There is a wide variety of itineraries to choose from, complemented by local circular tours and leading you across the very finest sites that Gironde has to offer. The hiking trails take you along the Ways of Saint James of Compostela, into the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers, Sauternes and Saint-Emilion vineyards, and through countless other unparalleled sites and landscapes.

They bear witness to Gironde’s extraordinary diversity, as regards both  nature and heritage – lakeshores, Gallo-Roman sites, pigeon houses, medieval châteaux and winegrowing châteaux, fortified mills, fishermen’s huts on the Estuary, forest-clearing hamlets, and so much more besides...

So much to see! Gironde is an altogether  unique destination.

3 “Walks and hikes” booklets, with suggestions for 18 circular tours between 6 and 21 km, are available from the Comité Départemental du Tourisme de la Gironde, 21 Cours de l’Intendance, Bordeaux.

  • On foot around the Arcachon Basin

In  Gironde, nature has never failed to think big – there’s the famous Great Dune of Pilat, the highest dune in Europe, for a start, not to mention the  Arcachon Basin, a real inland sea with tides of its own. This close and eternal relationship between ocean, wind, sand, fresh water and salt water has brought a world all of its own into being, enjoying a microclimate that nurtures the Basin all year long.

  • On foot in Entre-deux-Mers

With its enclosed valleys, grasslands, cultivated fields, forests and vineyards, “little Tuscany” is a real change of scenery, offering some of the most varied landscapes in Gironde. Farms, hamlets and villages bear witness to centuries of human habitation, and the Middle Ages have left behind them a rich heritage of houses, mills, bastide towns, monasteries and abbeys.

  • On foot in Haute-Gironde

Haute-Gironde is the birthplace of the largest estuary in Western Europe, walking the length of which is an experience affording countless surprises and taking you through often unexpectedly varied landscapes. You can set off in discovery of the region’s vineyards, marshes, forests and lakes, and the rivers that have shaped an undulating plateau providing marvellous views over the Gironde Estuary.

  • On foot in the Libournais

Home of the world-famous Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Petrus, Saint-Emilion and the 8 municipalities in its jurisdiction were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1999, under the heading “cultural landscapes”.

  • On foot in Médoc

Gironde is at its best in Médoc, where the forest delivers up its fragrances in a play of light and shadow, creating landscapes where serenity reigns supreme.

  • On foot in South Gironde

South Gironde has two faces to it. Along the  Garonne as far as Langon, you can make a tour of the  great historical châteaux and the famous Graves and Sauternes, including the world-renowned Château Yquem.
