In  Gironde, nature has never failed to think big – there’s the famous Great Dune of Pilat, the highest dune in Europe, for a start, not to mention the  Arcachon Basin, a real inland sea with tides of its own. This close and eternal relationship between ocean, wind, sand, fresh water and salt water has brought a world all of its own into being, enjoying a microclimate that nurtures the Basin all year long.

Such exceptional conditions provide an ideal living environment for a wide variety of flora and fauna, including 300 species of nesting and migratory birds.

Gironde is a much sought-after destination, to be sure, but one that only gives of its very best if you also set off to explore it on foot.

A rendezvous not to be missed!

Discovering nature

Cap-Ferret Point : between the ocean and the Arcachon Basin, discovery of the fauna and flora of the dune and maritime milieu.

Piraillan Reservoirs : an area favoured by the grey heron and containing numerous species of plant life.

Domaine de Certes-Graveyron,  Audenge: the estate belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral and is an internationally important migratory stop-off for many bird species, including the white spoonbill. On the site of an old salt marsh, the estate is these days devoted to protection of natural milieus, and is a meeting-place for the salt waters of the Arcachon Basin and the fresh waters of the River Leyre. Dyked salt meadows, salt marshes and fish-farming ponds.
