Discovering heritage

Blaye : Visit to the Citadel

The entire estuary carries the royal stamp of Louis XIV and his faithful architect Vauban, whose skills were put to the test from 1685 to 1689 by the building of the Blaye Citadel, which was designed to protect Bordeaux against sea invasion.
The Blaye Citadel, along with Fort Pâté on the island of the same name and Fort Médoc on the left bank, make up the defensive arsenal created by Vauban to close off the Estuary from attack.
This Vaubanian triptych is altogether unique in France, and the buildings have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites since July 2008.

Île Nouvelle  : property of the Conservatoire du Littoral, Île Nouvelle is a 6-km stretch of land in the heart of the Estuary, across from Blaye. Its history has been a chequered one – the scene of winegrowing and agricultural activity in bygone days, it was once inhabited and then abandoned. The island was reopened to the public in 2008, and you can share your adventures there with the storytellers you come across on the ancient seawall and in the middle of the village.

Discovering flavours

Marcillac

Located in the heart of the vineyards, the Domaine de Tout-l’Y-Faut is a typical old Blaye farm which invites you to sample the famous local product, Blaye Asparagus, in all its forms – fresh, as a cream soup or preserved – along with wine jelly and, of course, red and white Côtes de Blaye Bordeaux wines. The estate also has farmhouse teas on offer, along with tours in discovery of its fruit trees, Blaye asparagus cultivation and the winegrower’s art.

9 spits of land lie in the heart of the Estuary – the islands of Patiras, Bouchaud, Nouvelle, Fort Pâté, Verte, Nord, Cazeau, Margaux and Macau.
The islands are preserved natural sites (Nouvelle and Bouchaud), and resource centres for agriculture (Patiras) and for fishing and viticulture (Margaux and Île Verte). Fort Pâté accommodates the fort built by Vauban in 1690.
A wide range of e xcursions to the islands (Patiras and Nouvelle) is on offer, departing from the ports of Bourg, Blaye, Pauillac and Bordeaux.
