Romanesque art in Haute Gironde
The churches and Templar chapels in Magrigne, Asques and Saint-Martin-Lacaussade once provided lodging for pilgrims on the Way of Saint James of Compostela. The chapel in Magrigne contains some very fine murals and a Maltese cross.
The Saint-Saturnin-de-la-Libarde chapel in Bourg includes a magnificent and very old Romanesque crypt and sculpted capitals.
In Sainte-Eulalie, the church stands on a Gallo-Roman site and is one of the few in Gironde with a semi-circular apse and two side-aisles with flat chevets.
The remains of the Saint-Romain crypt are on the site of a vast necropolis in which, so legend has it, the body of Roland lay.
Also well worth a visit are the churches in Marcenais, Saint-Gervais, Tauriac, Bayon, Saint-Laurent d’Arce and Marcillac
