CDT 33 - Yannick Serrano

The monolithic church in Saint-Emilion is the largest underground church in Europe (11m high, 38m long and 20m wide) and was hollowed out of a single block of stone. It has recently been restored and provides moving testimony to the town’s earliest Christians and their place of worship.

In Guîtres, the abbey church of Notre Dame (11th century), which protected the village in days gone by, boasts a magnificent Saint-Onge-style portal. Its interior oak framework was most probably fashioned by local shipwrights.

Also well worth seeing are the churches in Saint-Aignan, Cornemps, Petit Palais, Villegouge, Galgon, Coutras, Saint-Médard-de-Guizières, Tayac, Francs, Saint-Cibard, Saint-Philippe d’Aiguille, Puisseguin and Montagne.
