Discovering Bordeaux through its squares
Place de la Bourse
Designed by the architect Gabriel, this square is one of the most representative of 18th-century French classical art. Today, the buildings of which it is composed house the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Musée des Douanes – well worth a visit!
An added pleasure: viewing (after nightfall is best) the dual effect of the water mirror created by the Parisian hydraulic engineer Jean-Max Llorca.

Place des Quinconces
The column known as the “Monument aux Girondins” and its magnificent fountain pay tribute to the Gironde deputies who fell victim to the Terror that followed the French Revolution.
An added pleasure: Initiation into the art of wine tasting, with lessons dispensed by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bordeaux nearby.
Place du Parlement
This square has something of an Italian piazza about it, and is an ideal setting for lunching on the terrace. It’s also the heart of the Saint-Pierre district, one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most picturesque neighbourhoods.
An added pleasure: strolling through the medieval streets of “old Bordeaux” and making your way along France’s longest shopping street (warning to shopaholics: there are 1.5 km of shops to contend with!).
Place Pey Berland
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Saint-André Cathedral was the scene of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s marriage to Louis VII, future King of France, in 1137.
Facing it, Palais Rohan now houses Bordeaux’s Town Hall. On the garden side are the two galleries making up the Musée des Beaux-Arts and, a few steps further on, Bordeaux’s highly unusual High Court.
An added pleasure: climbing the 231 steps up the Tour Pey-Berland and taking in the whole of Bordeaux with a single sweep of the eye, and a visit to the Grosse Cloche, one of medieval Bordeaux’s most important monuments.
