Lake Cazaux
Much appreciated for its fine sandy beaches, narrow little creeks, and calm, pure waters, the lake is a real paradise for family bathing. Mums and Dads will be delighted to find a bathing spot where they have no need to worry about the kids’ safety – in some places, you can wade out for several hundred metres, your head well above water.
Sailing enthusiasts can set off from the shores without having to disturb bathers or water-sports practitioners. Anglers also flock here, drawn by the magical setting, and there are fish aplenty to be caught - including pike, pikeperch, perch and carp – either in the canal or in the creeks where the fish go to spawn in the reedy shallows.
Lake Cazaux is formed by the accumulation of water from a deep spring in the Central Massif, which supplies the lake throughout the year.
An ancient Gallo-Roman village once stood on the lakeshore, before vanishing beneath its waters. A number of Iron Age sites have also been unearthed in the former bed of the Gourgue, a little stream south of the lake.
The two main beaches are supervised and, from mid-June to mid-September, there are first-aid posts open with lifeguards on hand. The other beaches, even when not supervised, have large stretches of shallow water ensuring safe bathing for families.
The GR 8 runs along part of the lake’s northern and all of its western bank, just a few metres away from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Anyone taking long holidays, or who enjoys short stays without too much running about, will find the village of Cazaux a delightful, well-equipped and thoroughly restful little bathing resort.
A 26.46-kg mirror carp was caught here in 1994, but the record was broken by another specimen weighing 29 kg!
