Lake Lacanau
Fed by the “crastes”, little streams that serve to drain the whole of the Médoc area, this 2,000-hectare lake is sheltered from the ocean winds and lies in a magical setting of maritime pines, gorse, broom, reeds and water lilies. Its shores are wild, particularly their southern and south-eastern stretches, and are dotted with fine beaches and isolated bays. The lake contains carp of an average weight of 7 to 12 kilos.
Although the southeast shore is difficult to get to, there is a wide marked-out pathway along the south-western lakeshore, starting from Longarisse and winding among reeds, water lilies and wooded dunes providing fine views over the lake. The GR 8 also runs alongside the lake, taking you through the forest to the Lacanau-Océan resort (6km) and on to Lège-Cap-Ferret (16 km).
Two islands lie offshore of Longarisse, connected by a submerged sandbank and ideal for a break when you are out kayaking. Kayakers can also get through to the Arcachon Basin along the Porge Channel to the south of the lake.
The Etang de Pitrot lies between the Talaris neighbourhood and Moutchic beach, a small lake exclusively reserved for water skiing; it is provided with numbers of pontoons and a springboard, and boasts a very pleasant fully equipped beach.
Good to know:
Kitesurfing is authorised in a designated area; jetskiing is prohibited anywhere on the lake.
