The great lakes
Among them are France ’s two largest freshwater lakes Lake Carcans-Hourtin and Lake Cazaux, which is supplied by waters from a deep spring in the Massif Central and contains some of the purest and cleanest water in France.
And not to be forgotten is Lake Lacanau, in its fairytale setting of pines, gorse bushes, broom and mimosas.
Gironde’s great lakes have a full programme for you to choose from – peace and quiet or partying, a spot of relaxation sheltered from the ocean winds or fun and games in the water. It’s up to you!
Gironde ’s great lakes came into being some 3000 years ago. Originally, they ran right alongside the Atlantic Ocean, before being separated by a cordon.
